“The Heaven is on the sky, Suzhou and Hangzhou are on the ground.” We can recognize people’s praise to Hangzhou from this saying. And Hangzhou is famous for its West Lake. “Of the thirty-six West Lakes east or west, the West Lake in Hangzhou is the best.” As this dictum reveals, China has thirty-six West Lakes - in Beijing, Fuzhou, Guilin, etc, but none are reputed to be as magnificent as the one in Hangzhou. The lake’s design was enriched with the picturesque north-south Su causeway and the east-west Bai causeway. Fairy Islet, an island at the lake’s center, is a wonderful spot to savour its scenic expanse. From a botanical perspective, the best location to enjoy the West Lake is the Quyuan Garden on its western shore. Within it are over two hundred species of lotus-a view of these unusual flowers blooming (July to September) against the serene background of the West Lake may be one of the most stunning floral spectacles you will ever behold. In other time of the year the garden is still marvelous to visit since tea tables, placed in courtyards and pavilions along the lake shore, create an ideal atmosphere to survey one of the most delightfully picturesque spots in China. West Lake lies there like a virgin, elegant, bright, delicate and pretty, caring the creatures with her natural beauty.

The Six Harmonies Pagoda is located on Yuelun Hill overlooking the Qiantang River, and south of West Lake (Xi Hu) and is one of the true masterpieces of ancient Chinese architectures. Originally the pagoda was built during the Northern Song Dynasty (386-581) by the ruler of the Wuyue State, a part of which became Zhejiang Province. The name 'Liuhe' comes from the six Buddhist ordinances and it is said that the reason for building this pagoda is to calm the tidal waters of the Qiantang River, and as a navigational aid. However, the pagoda was completely destroyed during a battle in the year 1121.
